11/15/2023 0 Comments Highland golfThe late fall and winter are pretty good for that type of grass, but is a headache the rest of the year. It is so hard to keep Bent alive here, and in the summer they are always so shaggy. Editorializing here, but I really don't understand why courses in my part of the country don't switch to the TifEagle Bermuda. This has been a longtime haunt of mine, but the first time I've played here since they shut down the course a few months ago after losing their Bent greens to the extreme Deep South heat. The greens have been better there the last 3 times I’ve played than Highland Park. Highland Park is okay, but it tries to be classier than it is because it’s in an older money part of Birmingham. We could have paid for 18 at Roebuck after 3:00 for LESS than the twilight AND gotten a rain check there. They told us that they don’t give rain checks for twilight no matter what as they proceeded to give everyone who paid for 9 or 18 a rain check. We requested a 9 hole rain check since we could have easily gotten 18 in and only played 4.5 holes. We sat in our carts under the clubhouse for about half an hour before the marshal sent someone to pull the flags and call it a day. We hit our tee shots on hole 5 and a horrible storm hit. More than 3 hours to play with no one in front of us. We teed off at 4:50 and sunset was right at 8:00. I typically think Highland Park is okay, but my friend and I paid $30 for a twilight yesterday. I’m sure this is a result of being shut down for as long as they were and they are trying to make up for that lost revenue, but that’s a bit overpriced.Īll in all, well done to the staff for improving the course immensely. My only criticism is that $40 to walk is a bit steep, compared to other value offered by area courses. It was not as difficult a walk as I anticipated either. The pace of play benefits from the current model. It will never happen, but I wish HP would go to walking only after all of this is over. Love the brush clearing done around #16 green and #17 tee that reveals even better views of the the Magic City skyline.Ĭurrently it is walking only due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bunker fronting the first green is a nice addition to provide some defense to a driveable par 4. As the greens mature, they will soften, but play short of flags and allow for some rollout.Īlso liked the subtle tweaks to the course they made during the closure. But not walking up to greens that are pockmarked with pitch marks is a welcome sight. The newness of the greens, however, render them hard, so carrying balls to the pin and getting them to stop is not currently an option. Changing over from Bent to the Victory Bermuda was a tremendous upgrade. let me take your to play there and show you all there is to offer. The HP renovation is an absolute success. So sencere, if seeking a membership at a Country Club. I live on a golf course with in 5 miles of Highland so I know the difference between a okay course and amazing gem, that given tons of TLC. Don’t even take an opinion of someone who worked their 10 years ago and has played and has friends that are currently members and will continue to be, as their fathers, as well as grandfathers are members as well. So before reading a small review from a gentleman who played there once do a lil research of your own. Highland is an amazing country club overall filled with friendly staff and equally friendly and embraceful members. As well as other private grade schools and high schools using the tennis courts, Golf, and swimming amenities as Home base for their school sporting events and practices. Every guest is greeted with a smile and followed with the question what can I do for you? The Butler Univerity Golf Team uses this course as its home base. Because like I stated before the staff and members are like extended family. The pool house and pool is currently under going an entire renovation this winter, with an amazing and magical place to spend warm summer days around a pool with friends and family. Highland is very family oriented and has swim teams and tennis teams for the kiddos, the muiti pools at Highland with lockers and showers and Lifeguard station and Food and Grill also located in the Pool House. And the clarify the other review which wasn’t very accurate, felt it was only fair to state facts. It’s a course rich with history, reflected in the excellent well maintained building, entire course, work out facility w/ yoga room & classes, massage therapist on, tennis academy ( with 10 courts & Pickle ball & 3 Paddle Courts, w heated floors for winter leagues & Leagues for all sports), new Golf Academy Building w 3,000 plus feet of indoor putting greens, 4 indoor driving range bays, private lesson bays, bar, new lockers for men and women, AND INDOOR VirtuAl reality Driving Range. I have friends that are members and worked here in high school.
